Getting the House Ready for Spring

8 things to do to prepare your home for spring

When the sun gets higher on the horizon and early wild flowers start to bloom,
it's time to do your spring cleaning. (Source - Pixabay.com

It's been a little colder recently than it was earlier in the winter. The temperature should be starting to go up a bit again, but the freezing cold has got me wishing for warmer weather. I know spring is still quite far away, but that won't stop me from daydreaming about it. It's sure to be pretty wet, as usual, but at least that will get nature flourishing. Winter can be a bit dull with its bare trees and grey skies, so I can't wait to see those first spring buds. I've been thinking about getting the house ready for spring, even though it's still a couple of months away. Since we rent our house, the landlord is responsible for some things. But there are still some things we need and want to do.

Put Some Plants Out

There might be some things that grow in the winter, but there are only so many poinsettias I can look at. Of course, you can grow plants inside, but it's just not the same. I love seeing things growing in the spring time, even if I'm not the most green-fingered person. Since I'm trying to get organised this year, it's definitely time to do something with the garden. I'll be putting out some plants, both at the front and back of the house. Potted plants at the front of the house make everything much more welcoming, I think. In the garden, we do want to keep the lawn, though.

Assess the Heating

We've had the heating on a lot this winter, even though we try not to use it too much. If I were out of the house all day, it would be another matter. But I can't sit at home and freeze! We'll probably still be heating the house a little when spring arrives. It won't suddenly reach tropical temperatures, after all.

As we start to use it less and not have it turned up so high, I'll make sure to check it. Bleeding the radiators is always a good idea after using them so much. http://www.uswitch.com/energy-saving/ has a great guide if you don't know how to do it. And I want to ensure the boiler will be fine when it's not getting as much use.

Check the Roof and Guttering

We've had plenty of rain and even a bit of snow and hail this winter. Plus, there's been a lot of wind. All these nasty weather can have an effect on the roof, so we'll need to check that it's all okay. We're sure to be in for more rain during spring and we don't want any leaks! I don't think I'll be the one dealing with any issues, though. We'll mostly just need to take a look at the roof from the ground and from inside. No need to get on any ladders, thankfully! The gutters will need clearing too. If there are any problems, perhaps we'll have to have our landlord visit http://www.fergusonroofing.com/guttering/. If any guttering needs to be replaced, we had better sort that out ASAP.

Actual Spring Cleaning

Spring cleaning might seem like a bit of a cliche, but things can go a bit wonky over the winter. It's hard to find the motivation to stay as tidy as you usually do when it's always cold and dark! Spring is a great time to get into all the nooks and crannies to give everything a thorough clean. We can make sure we get rid of cobwebs and maybe give the windows a good shine. It might even be warm enough to have the windows open now and then!

Clearing Out

Spring is a great time to have a big old clear out too. If you want a guide, you can find one at http://www.goodhousekeeping.com/home. It's hard to keep your home minimalist, especially when you have children. Luckily, I like my home to have a bit of character, so I don't keep things too sparse. But I still end up needing to remove some things now and then. If you get rid of old stuff, you can make room for the new. Everyone's got something they can pass on to someone else or throw away. It might be baby clothes, your own clothes or even furniture you don't like anymore.

Not everything will have to be boring cleaning and maintenance. When it starts to get a bit warmer and sunnier (hopefully), we can redecorate too. Winter calls for cosy cushions and blankets, but in spring, we can switch things up. I like having lots of bright colours around the house, and there should be even more in spring. I'll also have to make sure everything is baby proof, but that won't stop me decorating with style. I always think the changing seasons are good times to redecorate.

Get Outside Ready for Summer

It's not just plants and flowers I'd like to put outside. We don't have a huge garden, but there's still enough space to use. I don't think there's any point in having a garden if you can't get out and use it. If spring is far away, then summer is even further, but that doesn't mean I can't think about sitting outside in the summer. It might not be too early to put out some new garden furniture, especially if we put a waterproof cover over it. It could be a bit too soon for cushions on the seating, though! I love having somewhere to sit, and it would be great to have a flourishing lawn that I can spread a picnic blanket on.

As a final touch for your spring clean up, light up some scented candles
to get your house smell great and fresh. (Source - https://flic.kr/p/hZBWjW

Get a Spring Smell In

A love a beautiful spring scent, so I'd like to make the house smell delicious. Bringing some plants inside can do that, but of course, there are artificial fragrances too. And then there are candles, which I can't resist. You have to be a bit careful when there's a baby around, especially when they start moving about. But you can still use them if you put them out of reach of little fingers.

I can't wait for winter to turn into spring. It might still be wet, but at least it should be a bit warmer. And the house is going to look great.
